You might have aware of this icon set because this was designed and developed by Ubuntu designer team for unity 8. It used in canonical powered Ubuntu mobile and tablet system.

Due to various reason Ubuntu has already closed the development of Ubuntu mobile system and it’s icon set. When Ubuntu developers left the project, Sam Hewitt took over the project and added the missing icons. That’s why we are enjoying suru icon in Ubuntu system.

Suru is a revitalization of the icon set that was developed for the (now defunct) Ubuntu mobile platform. The principles and styles created for Suru now serve as the basis for a new FreeDesktop icon theme. It has also been extended with a desktop cursor theme.

Note:

  • Suru for the desktop is still in-development, hope it will be finished soon.
  • Developer clearly said, he is not going to support any other distributions due to some limitation (it cause a lot of bugs and increase the file size). He prefers to focusing only on Ubuntu distributions.

Original mobile application icons have been re-purposed to theme their GNOME counterparts. Folder and file type icons have been added, based on a unreleased Suru concept.

Plus a complete symbolic icon set has been created, with many icons based on the original Suru system icons.

Supplementary to the icon theme is the Suru cursor theme. It has a style designed to compliment the Suru icons through subtle nods to the geometry of the icons.
