Linux Lite 2.8 Release Notes & Upgrade Steps

Linux Lite is fully functional out of the box, which was designed who are new to Linux or for people who want a lightweight environment for desktop and laptop. Linux Lite project proudly announced the general availability of Linux Lite 2.8 on January 31, 2016. Linux Lite is based on Ubuntu distribution. This is the Final release to Linux Lite 2.x Branch. In this release included Hardware Enablement Stack 3.19 based Kernel. As well as the usual latest versions of – Firefox 44.0, LibreOffice 5.0.4, Thunderbird 38.5.1, Added BTRFS Support, Added HEVC H.265 Support in VLC & Added xbacklight.

Note : 1) Don’t forget to take backup of your important/valuable data. If something goes wrong we will install freshly and restore the data.
2) Upgrade will take time based on your Internet connection

1) Checking the current version of my Desktop

See my current desktop version in the below snapshot. Currently i’m using Linux Lite 2.6. Menu >> Settings >> Lite Control Center.

2) How to Upgrade Linux Lite to latest version

Use the below commands to upgrade your system from Linux Lite 2.x to 2.8.

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install lite-upgrade-series2 -y

Navigate to Lite Upgrade package. Menu >> Settings >> Lite Upgrade
Linux Lite upgrade utility.
Linux Lite Upgrade Under Process.
Upgrade completed, then reboot.
Now, I’m in latest version but kernel is old one.
Whoever performing Lite Upgrade from 2.x to 2.8 the Hardware Enablement Stack 3.19 Kernel wont installed by default. Linux Lite team advised upgrading Linux Kernel 3.19 is too harm for your system and its own Risk.

$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-core-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-video-all-lts-vivid xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-vivid libwayland-egl1-mesa-lts-vivid
