Ubuntu upgrade 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr To 14.10 Utopic Unicorn

Ubuntu Community released Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn on October 23, 2014 and the new project code name is Utopic Unicorn. Its time to upgrade your Desktop/Server from 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr To 14.10 Utopic Unicorn. There is no major bug fixes on this release. It short time support, Ubuntu 14.10 will be supported for 9 months for Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Core, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin along with all other flavours. In this article I’m going to show how to upgrade from 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr To 14.10 Utopic Unicorn.

What’s new in Ubuntu 14.10

  • Firefox is updated to version 33

  • Gtk updated to version 3.12
  • Qt updated to version 5.3
  • LibreOffice is updated to version 4.3

Note : 1) Don’t forget to take backup of your important/valuable date. If something went to wrong we will install freshly and restore the date.
2) Ubuntu 14.10 Upgrade will take around 3 hours

Method-1 : Ubuntu Desktop Upgrade using GUI

Follow the below steps to upgrade Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr To 14.10 Utopic Unicorn via GUI.

1) Update system package

Use the below command to make your system upto date. This will instantly downloading and upgrading packages to latest version.

[email protected]:~$ sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade

Once the above process is got over, Reboot the system.

2) Upgrading system to 14.10

Use the below command to upgrade your system to latest version of Ubuntu 14.10.

[email protected]:~$ sudo update-manager -d

Software updater run few seconds and shows pop-up with available version of ubuntu distribution.

Welcome screen for version upgrade, Just hit Upgrade button to move forward.

Downloading and Installing new version packages.

Removing obsolete packages.

Upgrade got completed. Hit Restart Now button to play with Ubuntu 14.10.

Method-2 : Ubuntu Desktop Upgrade using TERMINAL(Command line)

Just type Below commands to upgrade Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr To 14.10 Utopic Unicorn

# Make your system upto date #
[email protected]:~$ sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade

# Upgrade your system #
[email protected]:~$ sudo do-release-upgrade -d
