Install skpye 4.3 on Linux Ubuntu, mint & Debian

Skype Technologies S.A (Microsoft Corporation) announced the new release of Skype 4.3 for Linux on June 18th 2014. 1) Remove Old skype installation

Use the below command to check whether skype is already installed or not on your system.

# Check Skype Version #
$ dpkg -l | grep skype

# If so, Remove Old Skype Version #
$ sudo apt-get purge skype*

2) Skype support package installation

Use the below command to install skype supported packages on your system. To support indicator menu you need install below required package

# Enable Menu Indicator Support #
$ sudo apt-get install sni-qt:i386

# Enable MultiArch (Only for 64-bit systems) #
$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Due to dependency problem some time the apps/package which we trying don’t install, so I’m going to install the gdebi package (GDebi can install local .deb packages with automatic dependency resolution ). apt does the same, but only for remote (http, ftp) located packages.

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi

3) Download the skype archive file

Use the below command to download the skype 4.3 archive file.

$ wget
$ sudo gdebi skype-ubuntu-precise_4.3.0.37-1_i386.deb
$ skype

Agree skype Terms of Use
skype main window launched and click skype Name button.
Enter your skype username and its password, then hit Sing in button.
Skype main window launched successfully.
skype chatting window.
