FreeBSD 11.0 Released after initial delay, Why ? Due to bspatch vulnerability, a special procedure must be followed for safe upgrade

Upgrading from FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE and Earlier

Just follow the below procedure to update your vulnerable system via a binary patch.

Make sure, your current system is upto date by running below command.

$ freebsd-update fetch
$ freebsd-update install

First, check the current FreeBSD version by running below command.

# freebsd-version -k

10.3-RELEASE-p7

Truncate bspatch to a zero byte file.

# :> /usr/bin/bspatch

Run the below command to Fetch the FreeBSD 11.0 packages. It will take a while and depends upon your internet connection, better to have a coffee.

# freebsd-update upgrade -r 11.0-RELEASE

After Packages downloaded, run the bellow command to install the downloaded upgrades.

# freebsd-update install

Reboot your system

# shutdown -r now

Run the upgrade again to complete the upgrade.

# freebsd-update install

Once again, reboot your system & run upgrade to rebuild third-party software

# shutdown -r now

# freebsd-update install

Finally check the Upgraded FreeBSD version by running below command.

# freebsd-version -k
